Afterschool programs help engage and motivate students and allow them to explore underlying familial or social-emotional factors. Additionally, we provide students who attend the afterschool program with the additional support they need and foster school engagement.
Our goal at Teens on the Run is to inspire and motivate students to take charge of their life, health, nutrition, academics, and goals in life. Additionally, we want to ensure that students who attend the Teens on the Run program graduate middle and high school with college and career-ready skills vital for creating a successful life.

Lucy is a native Houstonian. Grew up in East End (now EaDo) and have lived in the Oak Forest neighborhood for 20+ years. Lucy is a firm believer in physical fitness. She has worked with middle-grade students for over 30 years. During her running years, she created the Teens on the Run program.
She saw the need for an afterschool program for middle-grade students that encourages physical fitness and broadening students' awareness about their future.
She earned a B.A. in Education from the University of St. Thomas - Houston. Lucy is happily married to Greg Cain and has five wonderful children, Will, Duncan, Ben, Molly, and Zach, along with two cats, Whisker and Jerry.
I first came to Texas as a transfer student to Southern Methodist University in Dallas. Eventually, I earned three degrees at SMU – a bachelor’s in business administration and two law degrees (a J.D. degree and an LL.M. in Tax). I also met my first wife, Kate, there. We were blessed with three children, all now grown and established in their careers.
I, meanwhile, worked as a tax lawyer in corporate tax departments, retiring from Service Corporation International in 2020. I met Lucy two years after Kate passed away. We were married in 2012 and make our home in the Oak Forest neighborhood of Houston. Lucy’s passion for encouraging others to reach their full potential is apparent to all who meet her and underlies her belief in the Teens on the Run concept.
We launched the program in 2010, setting it up as a Texas non-profit corporation. We applied for and received charitable tax-exempt status in 2011. Given current events, the program is more relevant than ever. With Lucy as the creative force behind Teens on the Run, I’m excited about its revival and working with our talented college partners to bring its message of hope and possibilities to today’s middle schoolers.
Aledrian Kemp is a senior at the University of Houston studying Human Development and Family Studies with a certification in Nonprofit Leadership Alliance. Aledrian has worked in the third ward community serving as a program manager and mentor coordinator of a University of Houston mentor program.
Moreover, Aledrian has experience working with middle school students and enjoys representing black and brown students. Aledrian believes that education is the key to success for students. I look forward to working with the Teens on the Run mentees and building lifelong relationships with the students and parents.
Aledrian will serve as the program director for summer 2021, and we welcome her to the Teens on the Run family.
The Teens on the Run team consists of highly qualified and motivated professionals who are all experienced in their field. With many years of experience or school-related training in the industry, they are motivated to provide comprehensive, first-rate mentoring services to our students.
Sofia was born and raised in Mexico. Sofia is an enthusiastic individual who likes to decorate events in her own time as well as teach her friends how to do Pilates. She is currently completing a bachelor’s degree in Human Development and Families Studies at the University of Houston. Along with this accomplishment, she will also become certified in nonprofit management. As a Teens on the Run’s intern, she is excited about the many challenges she will face such as, starting the program back up, as well as staying determined in order to provide the best afterschool mentorship program.
A program she hopes will create a safe space and an open environment, that will foster creativity, physical activity, independence, and self-esteem within each kid. Sofia has experience working in nonprofits.
Her biggest accomplishment so far has been to run a summer program for Catholic Charities through their Blessed Beginnings program, which included daily themed activities that allowed the kids to express themselves, learn to work as a team, teaching them the importance of reading, and allowed them to search their talents.
